Padma Sree PT. Ram Kumar Mallick (1957 to 2024 )
One of the oldest tradition of musicians since 500 years, the Dhrupad tradition of Darbhanga and the Mallick family- they both are one & the same thing, Born in 1957, Pandit Ram Kumar Mallick belongs to the illustrious musical family of Darbhanga Gharana (Mallick Gharana) and represents the 12th generation of this musical lineage. His training in Dhrupad Music started at an early age under the guidance of his father late Pt. Vidur Mallick, the world renowned Dhrupad Legend. He had the opportunity of learning from his grandfather Lt. Pt. Sukhdev Mallick, the renowned Dhrupad Vocalist.
The tradition of Darbhanga is embodied in the stunning force of his form of Alap, the incessant flow of his laya joined with the finest literature (Poetry). His recital is marked for the unique, rich repertory of compositions, the use of Gaurharwani & Khandarwani besides variety of Layakaries & Tihayees.
In the year 1985 he stood first at the national youth festival and was awarded by the then president of India Gyani Jail Singh representing Kameshwar Singh Sanskrit University,Darbhanga. He was awarded by the Vidyapati Seva Sansthan, Darbhanga with title of Mithila Ratna in International Maithili Sammelan, Mumbai. He has been selected as a Dhrupad Guru for Guru Shishya Parampara Scheme 2010-11 in the field of Hindustani Classical Vocal (Dhrupad/Dhamar) by E.C.Z.C.C Kolkata. He was awarded Swati Tirunal Puraskar in the 39th Akhil Bhartiya Dhrupad Mela, Varanasi (2014). He was awarded Sadhna Samman 2016 presented by youth, Art & Culture dept Patna (Bihar). He was also awarded PadmaShri Pt Siyaram Tiwari Varishta Kalakar Award in 2017. He was awarded Padma Shri Samman -2024 by Govt. Of India. Outside India, his concerts have been recorded by Radio Bremen (BR), Radio frankfut (HR), Radio Beligium (BRJ), BBC London.
He was a regular broadcaster of All India Radio and Television, and is a well-known 'TOP' Grade Artist of AIR & TV in Dhrupad and has successfully performed at many prestigious music festivals all over India & Abroad. He was an empanelled artist with ICCR. He was mastered not only Dhrupad Music but also in Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Vidyapati Geet as well as Bhajan.

Pandit Vidur Mallick ( 1935-2002 )
Born in the Amta village of Darbhanga in 1935, Pandit Vidur Mallcik inherited the dhrupad music from his father Lt. Pandit Sukhdev Mallick, renowned Vocalist. He was the descendent of Late Pt. Radha krishna, the elder of the two brothers who started the musical tradition of the Darbhanga tradition. The King of Darbhanga decorated the family with the title “Mallick” because of the marvelous impact of the divine musical practice of their ancestors.
He founded a Dhrupad Gurukul named "Pandit Sukhdeo Mallik Sangeet Samiti" , a music school in the name of his father and Guru in Vrindawan, the centre of Krishna worship and home town of Dhrupad near Delhi. In 1983, Panditji accepted the position of Dhrupad Acharya in the Brajakala Gurukul run by Sri Caitanya Prem Sansthan, Vrindawan. He ave training to many students including foreigners who learned the Dhrupad music of Darbhanga gharana according to “Guru-Shisya” parampara (tradition), today many of them are an established musician. His Contribution in popularizing the Ancient Hindustani Classical music Dhrupad can be seen by his good number of disciples all over the world.
A book called The Darbhanga Tradition-Dhrupada in the School of Pandit Vidur Mallick by Selina Thielemann was published for the Education and research purpose on Dhrupad. He was also featured in the documentary movie “Dhrupad Parampara”.
Apart from being a great Vocalist, he was also a great composer; he made several compositions in Rare Ragas with Tulsidas, Surdas, Swami Haridas & Mia Tansen pada. He was felicitated with many prestigious awards for his excellent music and contribution in the Dhrupad & its popularity in India as well as abroad. The great Maestro left the Music world in the year 2002, leaving behind his huge family, Sons, grandsons & many talented students but his presence is always there in the music of Darbhanga Gharana.
